Ads Take Days. Search Takes Months. Most Home Service Businesses Should Run Both

Ads produce calls in days and stop the day you stop paying. Search takes months and then costs nothing per click. Neither is the right answer on its own for a business that needs the phone to ring this quarter and next year.

Run together, the ads carry you through the search ramp and the spend usually comes down rather than up as rankings arrive. Ads also tell you which words actually convert, which makes the SEO smarter.

If you need calls this month, ads. If you want calls that do not cost money per click a year from now, search. The teardown will tell you which is more urgent for your situation rather than selling you both by default.

What the Setup Fee Buys

01

A dedicated landing page, not your homepage.

Most of the setup money is this. Your homepage is built to serve everyone and a paid click needs to serve one thing. Sending ad traffic to a homepage is the single most expensive habit in local advertising.

02

A negative keyword list built before launch.

So you stop paying for junk on day one rather than discovering it in month two. Keyword research against real local search volume, and a competitor ad analysis before a single line is written.

03

Campaign structure by service, not one bucket.

Ad copy written per service with multiple variants for testing, and every extension turned on: call, location, sitelink, callout, structured snippet.

04

Call tracking, recording and conversion tracking.

Calls, forms and clicks-to-call all counted, because a campaign you cannot measure to the call is a campaign measured on clicks, and clicks are what gets reported when the phone is not ringing.

05

Geo-targeting and scheduling set to reality.

Your real service radius rather than the whole metro, and an ad schedule set to when you actually answer the phone. Budget pacing so you do not burn the month in week one.

Then, every month.

Search term review with negatives added weekly, bids and budgets adjusted against cost per call, new ad variants tested, landing page tweaks based on what converts, and seasonal adjustments ahead of your busy period.

Two Things I Will Not Do, and Both of Them Cost Me Money

The first is marking up your ad spend. Google bills your card directly. I never touch the money, never take a cut of it, and you can log in and see every dollar of it in an account with your name on it.

The reason this matters is not the few percent. It is that a markup gives me a financial reason to want you spending more, and that is a reason you should never be paying for. An agency running your spend through their own account is an agency you cannot audit.

The second is taking spend that is too small. Below about $1,500 a month on Google there is not enough data to optimise properly, so the account never gets good.

You would get a bad result and I would get a bad case study. I would rather say no on the first call. If that is more than you want to spend right now, the search side is the better place to start and I will say so.

There is a third version of the same thing that shows up later. The first month of any account is diagnostic and usually the most expensive per call. If by month two the numbers are not moving in the right direction, I will tell you to stop rather than keep billing you.

Ads are not right for every business, and pretending otherwise costs you considerably more than it costs me.

The management fee also goes in writing before the first campaign is built, and it does not creep upward just because your spend did. Above $5,000 a month in spend it moves to 15%, because the work genuinely scales with the budget, and that is on this page rather than in a conversation.

What I will not do

$0 Markup on your ad spend. Google bills your card. I never touch it.
$1,500 Monthly spend floor. Below it I turn the work down rather than take it.

The account is built in your Google Ads login, so if we stop working together you keep the campaigns, the conversion data and the history. Starting from zero at a new agency is what actually makes people feel stuck, and it is avoidable.

How It Works

Week 0

The teardown.

$47. What your competitors are bidding on, what your map looks like, and whether ads or search is the faster fix for you specifically.

Week 1

Landing page and build.

The page, the keyword research, the negative list, the campaign structure and the tracking. Calls usually start inside the first week of the account going live.

Month 1

Diagnostic.

Mostly about cutting waste and finding which words convert. This is the most expensive month per call and it is supposed to be.

Month 2

The honest checkpoint.

If the numbers are not moving in the right direction, I tell you to stop. As rankings arrive on the search side, ad spend usually comes down rather than up.

Setup, Then Management. Published

$1,500 then $600

A one-time setup of $1,500, which is mostly the landing page, then $600 a month to manage it. Above $5,000 a month in spend, management moves to 15% of spend, because the work scales with the budget.

Ad spend is separate, billed direct to you by Google, and never marked up. Plan on at least $1,500 a month of it for a local service business, because below that the account cannot be optimised properly.

Ads are included at no extra management cost inside the top local SEO tier. The landing page is the same discipline as a proper website, which is why most of the setup fee is that page.

Everything People Ask About Google Ads

How much does Google Ads management cost?

A one-time setup of $1,500, which is mostly the landing page, then $600 a month to manage it. Ad spend is separate, billed direct to you by Google, and never marked up. Above $5,000 a month in spend, management moves to 15% of spend.

How much should I spend on ads?

At least $1,500 a month on Google for a local service business. Below that there is not enough data to optimise properly, so the account never gets good. If that is more than you want to spend right now, start with local SEO instead.

What the search side costs →

How fast do Google Ads work?

Calls usually start within the first week. That is the whole reason to run them alongside SEO, which takes months. The first thirty days are mostly about cutting waste and finding which words convert.

Do you mark up my ad spend?

No. Google bills your card directly and I never touch it. You can log in and see every dollar. Any agency running your spend through their own account is one you cannot audit, and that is worth asking about before you sign anything.

Who owns the ad account?

You do. It is built in your Google Ads account under your login. If we stop working together you keep the campaigns, the conversion data and the history, which is what makes a new agency cheaper to start with.

Should I do ads or SEO?

If you need calls this month, ads. If you want calls that do not cost money per click a year from now, SEO. Most home service businesses should run both, with ads paying the bills while the rankings build. The teardown will tell you which is more urgent for your situation.

Why do I need a separate landing page?

Because your homepage is built to serve everyone and a paid click needs to serve one thing. Every extra step between the ad and the form loses roughly half the people, and sending ad traffic to a homepage is the most expensive habit in local advertising.

Do you run Local Services Ads too?

Google Local Services Ads are the pay-per-lead ones with the green badge. They are worth setting up for most trades and I will tell you if yours qualifies. They work differently from search ads and generally sit alongside rather than instead of them.

Am I locked into a contract?

No. This runs month to month, and you can walk with 30 days notice starting from the first month. The setup fee happens once, and everything it paid for, the landing page, the campaigns, the tracking, stays in your account when you go.

What happens if the ads do not work?

The first month is diagnostic and usually the most expensive per call. If by month two the numbers are not moving in the right direction I will tell you to stop rather than keep billing you. Ads are not right for every business and pretending otherwise costs you more than it costs me.

Where I Work

Based in Parker, Colorado, and on Front Range job sites in person. Geo-targeting gets set to the radius you actually drive to rather than the whole metro, because paying for clicks outside it is the quietest way an ad budget leaks.
